5 days before the game

O   Contact your opponent about 1 week before the game (say on Monday), either by email or phone. Make sure you agree on
  • Time and address of game
  • special rules for the field (no pets, parking restrictions, ...)
  • Jersey color (most leagues have two colors, some only one per team)
  • exchange cell phone numbers in case there is a change on short notice.
  • Rain-out policy and how you get notified if the game gets canceled.
O   Make sure parents are informed
  • time and place for the game
  • Jersey colors (but tell them to ALWAYS bring both colors if they have two jerseys).
  • if they need to help to setup or take down goals (usually home fields only)
  • about special rules for the field (no pets, parking, ...)
O   Think about the inital line up for the game
O   Print the roster of your team in such a way that it can be pasted on a game card. (SSJYSL has a form online that you can use, just don't select a team).

Before leaving for the game

O   Make sure you have a game card (home team only), your player and coaches passes and the roster to paste onto the game card (Ask your league where you can get game cards).
O   Take all the registration forms for the players with you (required if there is a medical emergency! Make sure parents have all signed the form!)
O   If you are the home team you will need 3 game balls (pumped!).
O   Make sure you are at the field 30min before the game starts, earlier if you have to setup the goals.
O   If you are the home team make sure you have the phone number of the person responsible for fields, and the referee scheduler so you can call them if there is a problem.

Before the game

O   If required have the parents setup the field.
O   Paste your roster on the game card (if you are the away team get the card from the home team's coach). The referee needs the card, plus your player and coaches passes.
O   Warm up the players, explain the initial line up and have them checked in by the referees when they ask for it.
O   Get ready for kick-off.

During the game

O   Enjoy the game! Remember: its about having fun, not winning!
O   Make sure all players get to play at least 50% of the time! You can subsitute if your team has a throw-in, before kick-off and goal kicks, if a player has been injured or received a yellow card.
O   DO NOT YELL AT THE REFS. Make sure your parents don't either, as YOU will be the one thrown of the field if the parents do not behave!!

After the game

O   Have your team cheer for the other team, have them shake hands with each other AND with the refs.
O   If necessary have the parents take down the goals and corner flags.
O   If there was a problem or something worked particularly well with the other team, field, parents, or referees send an email to the playthrough scheduler (email addresses are listed on the leagues page.
